Murphy Receives Preseason Praise From MAC

Following one of the most prolific individual campaigns in
school history, University of Akron sophomore Kara
Murphy was named to the Preseason All-Mid-American Conference
team, the league office announced Thursday.
Members of the MAC News Media Association as well as the league's
12 head coaches voted on the selections.
Joining Murphy on the exclusive list from the East Division are
Lauren Prochaska of Bowling Green, Anna Kowalska of Kent State,
Jenna Schone of Miami and Chandra Myers of Ohio. The West
representatives include Porchia Green and Emily Maggert of Ball
State, Britni Houghton of Central Michigan, Ali Clifton of Toledo
and Tiera DeLaHoussaye of Western Michigan.
Murphy was a member of the All-MAC Freshman Team and a third-team
all-league selection overall last season as the nation's
ninth-highest scorer among all first year players. Her total of 449
points for the season was the fifth-highest mark in school
history.
She was the only Akron player to start all 31 games a year ago and
led the club in scoring (14.5ppg/6th in MAC), rebounds (5.6 rpg),
minutes played (993), field goals (148), free throws (121) and
steals (40). She was also the MAC's fourth-highest scorer in league
games with a 15.9 points-per-game average.
Murphy, a co-captain on the 2008-09 UA squad, recorded double-digit
points in all but six games last season, hitting the mark in 18 of
her final 20 games. The native of Hartville, Ohio and St.
Vincent-St. Mary graduate will lead a young Akron team that also
features senior Ashley Veal and juniors Victoria
Arndt, Ayla Guzzardo and Jolene
Tamboue.
The preseason All-MAC teams will be available for interviews at the
conference's Basketball Media Day, which is scheduled for Thursday,
Oct. 30 at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland. The media
portion of the schedule is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. Fans will also
be able to watch the media preview live on the internet at www.mac-sports.com.
