The University of Akron Athletics
Women's Basketball Falls to Top-25 Bowling Green
January 04 | Women's Basketball
- Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green snapped the
University of Akron's six-game win streak as it defeated the Zips,
61-32, in the league opener for both schools on Wednesday at Rhodes
Arena.
The Falcons (11-2, 1-0 MAC) came into Akron as the No. 24-ranked
team in the latest Associated Press poll, and displayed their tough
defense by limiting the Zips to a season-low 30 percent (12-of-40)
shooting performance from the field. BGSU also benefited from 22
points off of 24 Akron turnovers.
"There's a reason why Bowling Green was picked number one (in the
MAC preseason poll)," Akron head coach
Jodi Kest said. "They made
some great shots, but it was their defensive effort that we weren't
ready for tonight. We are not as bad as we played tonight as a lot
of our struggles had to do with how well they played and not how
poorly we did."
Carin Horne led all scorers with 15 points to go along with six
rebounds for the Falcons, while UA sophomore
Niki McCoy (Sylvania,
Ohio/Northview HS) paced the Zips with nine points. Fellow
sophomore
Ashley Veal (Wadsworth,
Ohio/Wadsworth HS) tallied a season-high with seven points on
3-of-6 shooting.
With the scored knotted at nine seven minutes into the game, the
Falcons went on a 11-1 run to take a 20-10 lead at the 7:20 mark of
the first half. BGSU continued to increase its advantage and went
into the locker room with a 32-15 lead.
Akron (7-6, 0-1 MAC) was hindered by a poor shooting performance in
the first half, connecting on just 29.4 percent (5-of-17) of its
attempts from the field. The Zips also committed 14 turnovers,
which Bowling Green turned into 10 points.
In the second half the Falcons built their lead to 46-25 with less
than 12 minutes to play and cruised to their seventh-straight win
over Akron.
The Zips will return to the hardwood on Saturday at 2 p.m. EST when
cross-town rival Kent State invades Rhodes Arena.
