The Zips welcome back 16 offensive and defensive starters from a 2005 squad which went 7-6 and won the MAC Championship on Dec. 1 in Detroit's Ford Field in thrilling fashion. Senior quarterback Luke Getsy (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley/Pittsburgh) directed a late touchdown drive, hitting wide receiver Domenik Hixon with the winning score with 10 seconds left for a 31-30 victory over Northern Illinois.
That win earned Akron a berth in the Motor City Bowl and a date with Memphis. The Tigers defeated the Zips, 38-31, on Dec. 26 back in Detroit, but Akron was just the second team in the nine-year history of the game to sell out its allotment of tickets.
The Zips' first league title in school history came a week after their first-ever MAC East Division title. Akron ascended to Division I-A status in 1987 and entered the MAC in 1992.
