Biggs Invited to Redskins Rookie Camp
May 02 | Football
AKRON, Ohio - Former University of Akron running back Brett Biggs was invited Tuesday to tryout for the Washington Redskins at the team's Rookie Camp May 5-7.
Biggs joins former UA receiver Domenik Hixon as Zips from last season's roster who are attempting to make an impact in the National Football League. Hixon was chosen Sunday by the Denver Broncos with the 33rd pick in the fourth round (No. 130 overall) of the NFL Draft.
One of the top running backs in the Mid-American Conference the last two seasons, Biggs racked up 1,230 yards on 284 carries in 2005. He was the first Akron back to rush for more than 1,000 yards since Bobby Hendry in 2002, and the third overall since the Zips entered Division I-A in 1987
A reliable receiver out of the backfield, Biggs finished second on the team with 65 receptions last season, third most in the nation for a running back, racking up 535 yards and four touchdowns. The elusive runner rushed for 100 or more yards in three of the final six games, including a season-high 188 yards and two scores against Ohio (Nov. 15).
The 5-foot-7, 195-pound Biggs came to the Zips after spending
two seasons at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas. Originally
viewed as being too small for a Division I-A back, Biggs became the
Zips featured runner in the third game of the 2004 season. He
finished the year with 871 yards on 185 carries, earning the first
of his two second-team All-MAC selections.
Biggs, a native of Bartow, Fla., went on to tally seven career 100-yard games and 26 touchdowns. Despite just two seasons in blue and gold, he ranks ninth on the Akron career rushing yards chart with 2,101 yards and seventh on UA's career all-purpose yardage list (3,163).
The Rookie Camp is scheduled for Redskins Park in Washington
D.C.
