AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron quarterback Charlie Frye (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS) will continue his senior season next month when he heads to the Senior Bowl.
The 2005 Senior Bowl, presented by Food World, is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 29, in Mobile, Ala. That game will kickoff at 3 p.m. and be televised nationally by ESPN.
Frye, who earned the Vern Smith Leadership Award yesterday as the most valuable player in the Mid-American Conference, is the third player in Zips' history to participate in the Senior Bowl. Defensive end Jason Taylor, now of the Miami Dolphins, earned a nod after the 1996 season, and Dwight Smith, currently a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back, secured a spot following his All-American 2000 campaign.
"This is a great opportunity," Frye said of his selection. "It
is one of the best postseason games because the NFL coaching staffs
run the practices and the game."

The Senior Bowl is the nation's most unique football game, annually featuring the country's best senior players and top NFL draft prospects on teams representing the North and South which are coached by the entire staffs from two NFL teams. Practices are also attended by over 700 general managers, head coaches, assistant coaches, scouts and other front office personnel from the 32 NFL teams.
Frye ended the regular season ranked second all-time in the league in total offense (11,478) and third in passing yards (11,049). He currently ranks 10th in NCAA history in total offense and 15th in passing yards.
The senior completed 220 of 346 passes for 2,623 yards this season, his fourth year with over 2,000 yards in the air, becoming one of 16 QBs in NCAA history to perform that feat.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Charlie," head coach J.D. Brookhart said. "It's really a dream come true and it's great national recognition for the school."
Frye was also invited to the East-West Shrine game and Hula Bowl, but will decline those invitations since they will be played on Jan. 15 and Jan. 22, respectively.
