AKRON - The University of Akron athletics department today announced its nonconference football schedules for 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Beginning in 2002, NCAA Division I-A members can schedule 12 regular-season games during those years in which there are 14 Saturdays from the first playing date in August through the last playing date in November. That rule will apply in 2002, 2003 and 2008. In 2002, the Zips are slated to play at Iowa (Aug. 31), at Maryland (Sept. 7) and at Virginia (Sept. 21). Akron will entertain Liberty at the Rubber Bowl on Oct. 12. All four will be new opponents for the Zips.
In 2003, the Zips open at Hawaii (Aug. 30), play at Wisconsin (Sept. 6) and host Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 13). UA is looking to add one more nonconference game for 2003.
In 2004, Akron is back at Penn State (Sept. 4) and Virginia (TBD) and then plays at Connecticut (Sept. 25), which is the return game from last season's home game.
During coach Lee Owens' tenure, the Zips have played Virginia Tech three times (1995, 1996, 2000), Kansas State (1995), Nebraska (1997), Louisiana State (1997), Penn State (1999) and this season play road games at Ohio State (Sept. 8) and Purdue (Sept. 22).
