AKRON - Former Ravenna HS All-Ohioan Marcus Sanders yesterday signed a Mid-American Conference letter of intent to enroll at UA and play football for the Zips. Sanders, a 6-0, 185-pound running back, will be required to sit out the 2001 season following his transfer from Minnesota and will have three seasons of eligibility with the Zips beginning in 2002.
A 2000 Ravenna graduate, Sanders became only the sixth player in Ohio high school history to rush for more than 6,000 career yards. The 1999 Ohio Division II Offensive Player of the Year (along with Dover's Colby Byrom and Dayton Colonel White's Terry Pogue), he rushed for 2,341 yards and 34 touchdowns as a senior and finished his prep career with 6,793 rushing yards. Sanders led the Ravens to their first-ever OHSAA state playoff berth in 1999 as the team finished 9-2. He was special mention All-Ohio as a junior and was the Akron Beacon Journal Portage County Player of the Year as a sophomore and senior. Sanders signed with the Golden Gophers out of high school and opted for a redshirt last fall.
Sanders will join the Zips when preseason camp opens Aug. 9.
Coach Lee Owens' squad kicks off its 2001 season Thursday, Aug. 30,
at the Rubber Bowl against Ohio.
