AKRON - The Akron Zips will open their 2001 football season Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Rubber Bowl against the Ohio Bobcats. The Mid-American Conference East Division rivals were originally slated to meet Sept. 29. The MAC will contract with ESPN Plus for live regional television of the opener. It will be an evening contest, starting no earlier than 7 p.m., with the exact kickoff time to be determined by ESPN Plus. While the Zips had been slated to open Sept. 8 at Ohio State, the Ohio Bobcats were scheduled to open Sept. 1 at North Carolina State.
"We regret any inconvenience for our fans, but this change is beneficial for our program from a number of standpoints," said seventh-year Zips' head coach Lee Owens. "While it is a challenge to open your season with a conference opponent, regional television and exposure for our program is an opportunity we can't pass up. It also will give us a week off after playing at Purdue and in preparing for Western Michigan."
