Zips' Season Ends in Quarterfinals of MAC Tournament
March 06 | Women's Basketball
CLEVELAND, Ohio- Led by a blistering 11-for-18 performance from the three-point arc, the Northern Illinois Huskies defeated the Akron Zips, 69-47, this afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Kraft Women's MAC Tournament at Gund Arena. UA ends the season at 6-23.
"We knew we had to prepare for two three-point shooters (Knake and Secrest) and they showed us why they're rated so highly," said Akron's head coach Roxanne Allen.
NIU was out to an early 7-1 lead three minutes into the game, but a 9-3 run by Akron tied things at 10-all with 12:42 to play. Senior Cheryl Bowles capped the run with a three-point play and finished the game with a team-high 15 points.
From that point on the Huskies took the reigns of the game as Kristan Knake hit one of her career-best six three pointers to give NIU a 13-10 lead they would never relinquish. Knake ended the game with a career-high 23 points, including 6-of-8 shooting from the three-point arc.
"It's very difficult to prepare for a team you haven't faced for two years when all but two players are new," Allen said. "They had a lot more knowledge of us than we did of them."
In her final game in a Zip uniform, Jamie Scott
picked up her fourth double-double of the year with 11 points and
10 rebounds. Bowles' 15 points gives her 1,712 in her four-year
career, making her just the 13th player in MAC history to surpass
1,700 career points.
