Zips Can't Stop Kent State, 69-37

KENT, Ohio- Julie Studer, Carrie Nance and Andrea Csaszar finished with 12 points each for Kent State, and Akron shot just 32% from the floor as the Golden Flashes defeated the Zips Saturday afternoon at the M.A.C. Center, 69-37. The Zips are now 2-13 overall, 0-4 in conference action.
Akron's offense struggled early as Kent State (9-5, 4-0 MAC) jumped out to an 11-4 lead with 15:57 to play. Zip guard Jamie Krivak would hit a free-throw at 15:10, and thay would be the last time Akron would put points on the board for more than eight minutes as the Golden Flashes went on a 15-0 run to go up 26-5 before Sandy Martin would score a bucket at 6:48 to play.
"One big problem is that we just aren't scoring right now," said Akron head coach Roxanne Allen.
UA was once again plagued by turnovers as the Zips gave up the ball 38 times, resulting in 35 Kent State points.
One postive for the Akron squad was its defense as they held Kent State under its season scoring average and forced the Golden Flashes into take some bad shots as they hit just 43% of their field goal attempts.
"I think they play of our defense is the one real positive we can take away from this game today," Allen said.
Akron scoring leader Cheryl Bowles was held to just three points as the Zips were led by an eight-point effort from guard Julie McDivitt. Jamie Scott was the top rebounder for Akron with eight.
The Zips will have a week away from competition as they prepare
for their next game on January 20 at Western Michigan. The Zips'
next home contest is Tuesday, January 24 against Ball State.
