Smith Earns MAC Accolade

CLEVELAND - Akron defensive back Dwight Smith (Detroit, Mich./Central) was today named Defensive Player of the Week by the Mid-American Conference. Smith had three interceptions and blocked a field goal in the Zips' 35-24 win over Central Florida in Akron's home opener this past Saturday. The victory snapped Akron's season-opening two-game losing streak.

Smith's two first-quarter picks led to scores and a 14-0 Zips' lead. Late in the fourth quarter, his block of a UCF field goal ateempt kept the margin at 11 points. Smith also made eight solo tackles (nine total), had a pass break up and a tackle for a loss of three yards.
