The University of Akron Athletics
Zips Fall to Vikings, 87-62
December 05 | Women's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio- The University of Akron women put together a 16-3 run to end the first half and were down by just six at the break, but it was not enough as a hot three-point shooting Cleveland State squad handed the Zips their sixth-straight loss, 87-82, tonight at JAR Arena. UA is now 1-6, while the Vikings improved to 4-2.
Things did not start out well for Akron as 10 turnovers in the first ten minutes saw the Zips down, 25-7. During that span Akron had just two field goals with layups from Sandy Martin and Hollie Stephenson. With the Vikings leading 32-13 with six minutes to play, UA switched up its defensive scheme and went on a 16-3 run over the rest of the half to cut the Vikings lead to just six, 35-29, at the break. Martin had 11 at the break and finished with a career-high 15 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes for the first double-double of her career. Martin's previous career high was eight points, set last season against the Vikings.
The Vikings jumped on Akron early in the second half, pushing its lead back up to double digits after a minute of play. The Zips would pull within eight early on, 39-31, but from then on it was all Cleveland State as the Vikings hit eight three-pointers in the half to finish with a 25-point margin of victory. Four Vikings finished in double figures, led by guard Venus Harmeyer who had 15. Cheryl Bowles contributed 14 points for UA, along with seven boards.
There is little time for rest for Akron as they travel to
Hawai'i to play in the Hawai'i Invitational this weekend. Akron
faces Wright State on Friday, Dec. 8, before playing host Hawai'i
on Sunday, Dec. 10. The next home game for Akron is Dec. 22 against
Xavier.
