MUNCIE, Ind. – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team registered impressive performances en route to three league titles of the second day of the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Ball State at the Briner Sports Complex on Friday (May 15).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Akron leads the men's field with 112 points, which is 42 points ahead of second place Miami.
• The Zips also maintain the advantage in the women's team race with 73.50 points, 32.5 in front of second place Miami.
• Redshirt senior Brook Boes (Tiffin, Ohio) won her third league title triumphing in the women's shot put with a mark of 49-9.75 (15.18m).
• Redshirt senior Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) garnered his seventh career league title besting the field in the men's shot put with a mark of 59-9.25 (18.22m), while fellow redshirt senior Lane Graham (Killbuck, Ohio) collected second team All-MAC honors finishing second with a career-best throw of 57-7.75 (17.57m).
• Graham captured his second league title besting the field in the men's hammer with a career-best mark of 220-3 (67.12m), while junior Christopher Vance (Parma, Ohio) placed third with a mark of 200-3 (61.03m). Graham's throw is the second-best mark in outdoor program history.
• Redshirt sophomore Jeffrey Usman (Warri, Nigeria) earned second team All-MAC honors with a runner-up finish in the men's long jump with a leap of 24-9.25 (7.55m).
• Senior Taye Gonzalez (Lewis Center, Ohio) added team points in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:00.20, the fourth-fastest effort in outdoor program history.
• Earning qualifying times to advance to the finals on Saturday (May 16) on the men's side were juniors Andrew Styles (Freeport, Bahamas) (1st-46.70Q) and Braylyn Farrington (Alabaster, Ala.) (3rd-47.55Q) in the men's 400 meters, juniors Rennie Gittens, Jr. (Miami, Fla.) (4th-10.57Q) and AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) (5th-10.61Q) in the men's 100 meters and junior Majid Abuaun (Rocky River, Ohio) (2nd-1:49.88Q) in the men's 800 meters.
• Qualifying for the women's finals in the 400 meters was sophomore Jackline Nanjala (Kitale, Kenya) (2nd-54.36Q) and seniors Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) (8th-55.69q) and McKenzie McNitt (Cleveland, Ohio) (9th-55.78q) and freshman Te'Aira Branham-Patrick (Dayton, Ohio) (7th-11.76q) in the women's 100 meters.
