Akron Sets Sights on MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team will join the rest of their Mid-American Conference members this Thursday through Saturday, May 14-16, to compete at the league's Outdoor Championships, as Ball State hosts the three-day event at the Briner Sports Complex in Muncie, Ind.

In all, the championship meet will feature men's teams from Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Massachusetts and Miami, while all 13 league members will be chasing the title on the women's side.

The Zips' men squad will be looking to capture its 12th outdoor league championship, having won 13 of the last 20 league titles overall, after triumphing in back-to-back-to-back campaigns in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
On the women's side, the Zips are seeking their 11th overall outdoor championship after capturing the crown in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.
Akron under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Kendra Reimer-Gonzales, the five-time MAC Men's Coach of the Year, will battle for team titles on both the men's and women's sides again this year.
MAC MEET SCHEDULE: The MAC Championships will begin on Thursday, May 14 at the Briner Sports Complex with the start of the multis with the 100-meter hurdles in the women's heptathlon and the 100 meters as part of the men's decathlon at 10:00 a.m. and 10:25 a.m., respectively. The women's hammer will kick off the first of six field event championships on the day at 10:00 a.m., while running events start with the women's 1,500 meters at 5:25 p.m., before the women's 10,000 meters culminates the opening day at 7:25 p.m.
Second-day action begins on Friday, May 15 with the conclusion of the men's decathlon at 12:00 p.m. and the women's heptathlon at 12:30 p.m. Field events start with the men's hammer at 10:00 a.m., while running events will be bookended by the men's 110-meter hurdles meters at 4:10 p.m. and the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 6:50 p.m.
The final day of the championship on Saturday, May 16 kicks off with women's discus at 9:00 a.m. The first running event is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. with the men's 4x100 relay, before the meet wraps up with the women's 4x400 relay at 2:50 p.m. For a complete schedule of events, log on to MAC-Sports.com. Scoring in the meet will be on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for individual events and relays.
DEFENDING THEIR TITLES: The Zips have three student-athletes seeking to repeat as individual outdoor conference champions this season.
Redshirt senior Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) earned league titles in the men's discus (200-10/61.23m) and shot put (60-2.50/18.35m).
Redshirt senior Cassidy Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) captured the women's pole vault eclipsing 12-11.50 (3.95m).
Junior Mason Birch (Strongsville, Ohio) won the men's high jump with a career-best mark of 7-0.25 (2.14m).
Senior Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) headlines the returners on the defending champion 4x100 relay that crossed the line in 44.51.
Additionally, seven Zips earned Second-Team All-MAC accolades. Redshirt senior Lane Graham (Killbuck, Ohio) placed second in the men's hammer with a mark of 207-7 (63.29m), junior AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) finished second in the men's 100 meters and 200 meters in 10.52 and 20.74, respectively. Sophomore Isaac Baltic (Medina, Ohio) placed second in the men's pole vault eclipsing 17-0.25 (5.19m). The men's 4x100 relay team returns junior Braylyn Farrington (Alabaster, Ala.), Jordan and junior Andrew Styles (Freeport, Bahamas).

Akron competed at the trio of weekend meets last week to culminate the squad's league championship preparations.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Owen Wendl placed second in the men's shot put at the Len Paddock Open with a mark of 58-8.75 (17.90m), while Brook Boes recorded a career-best throw of 195-2 (59.49m) to finish second in the women's hammer.
• Sophomore Garett Boe (Chesapeake, Va.) won the men's pole vault with a career-best clearance of 16-11 (5.16m) at the West Virginia Last Chance meet, while freshman Amanda Rauch (Marietta, Ohio) eclipsed a career-best mark of 13-0.25 (3.97m) to triumph in the women's pole vault.
• Braylyn Farrington won the men's 400 meters in a career-best time of 46.99.
• Cassidy Allen eclipsed 13-5.75 (4.11m) to win the women's pole vault.
• AJ Jordan won the men's 200 meters in a time of 21.27.
• Ruth Webb won the women's high jump with a mark of 5-7.25 (1.71m).
• Junior Majid Abuaun (Rocky River, Ohio) bested the field in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:53.93.
• Emily Razo won the women's 5,000 meters in 20:13.57.
• Junior Bram de Raedt (Houthalen-Helchteren, Belgium) captured the men's 400-meters hurdles in a career-best time of 53.07.
• Junior Kavel Ritchie (Spanish Town, Jamaica) bested the field in the women's long jump with a leap of 18-9.25 (5.72m).
• Junior La'Kasja Edwards (Alliance, Ohio) registered a mark of 151-0 (46.04m) to triumph in the women's discus.
• The men's 4x100 relay team of sophomore Garrett Tiller (Streetsboro, Ohio), Jordan and junior Rennie Gittens, Jr. (Miami, Fla.) and Andrew Styles took the title in 40.36.
• Griffiths won the women's hammer invitational on the strength of the fourth-best mark in outdoor program history (205-1/62.52m).
• Boes and junior Victoria Kuol (Centerville, Ohio) placed second and third, respectively, in the women's elite hammer with marks of 192-2 (58.57m) and 180-3 (54.96m). Boes' throw represented a career-best mark.
• Graham and junior Christopher Vance (Parma, Ohio) finished second and third in the men's hammer invitational with marks of 218-2 (66.51m) and 204-8 (62.40m).
AKRON GARNERS MAC INDOOR POSTSEASON HONORS: Akron assistant coach Randy Overby was tabbed the Mid-American Conference Men's Assistant Coach of the Year after Akron captured back-to-back indoor team titles and its fourth consecutive overall league crown.
Brook Boes was selected as the MAC Women's Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet, after sweeping the throwing events winning the women's shot put (49-11.25/15.22m) and weight throw (68-4.50/20.84m).
Andrew Styles was honored as the MAC Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet after winning the 200M (21.67) and 400m (47.99) and anchoring the winning 4x400 relay (3:16.25).
Junior Megan Hipple (Warren, Ohio) was tabbed the MAC Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet after a pair of All-MAC performances winning the women's 3K (9:18.79) and placing second in the 5K (16.03.86).
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams have garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2026 outdoor season as the Zips are rated among the Top 30 in the Event Squad rankings for nine events released on May 12, 2026, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron is rated 11th nationally in the men's hammer and in the women's hammer, 13th in the men's discus and men's shot put, 18th in the women's discus, 19th in the men's pole vault, 20th in the women's pole vault and 27th in the women's shot put and, in the women's, triple jump.
ZIPS RANKED AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2026 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron have five individual student-athletes ranked in the Top 50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) for the 2026 outdoor campaign as Owen Wendl is 24th in the men's shot put (62-1/18.92m) and 45th in the men's discus (186-10/56.94m).
Additionally, Lane Graham is 27th in the men's hammer (219-11/67.03m), Gabrielle Griffiths is 31st in the women's hammer (205-1/62.52m), Amari Noble is 37th in the men's discus (189-11/57.90m) and Kaden Rambatt is 49th in the men's pole vault (17-3.50/5.27m).

Akron competed at the trio of weekend meets last week to culminate the squad's league championship preparations.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Owen Wendl placed second in the men's shot put at the Len Paddock Open with a mark of 58-8.75 (17.90m), while Brook Boes recorded a career-best throw of 195-2 (59.49m) to finish second in the women's hammer.
• Sophomore Garett Boe (Chesapeake, Va.) won the men's pole vault with a career-best clearance of 16-11 (5.16m) at the West Virginia Last Chance meet, while freshman Amanda Rauch (Marietta, Ohio) eclipsed a career-best mark of 13-0.25 (3.97m) to triumph in the women's pole vault.
• Braylyn Farrington won the men's 400 meters in a career-best time of 46.99.
• Cassidy Allen eclipsed 13-5.75 (4.11m) to win the women's pole vault.
• AJ Jordan won the men's 200 meters in a time of 21.27.
• Ruth Webb won the women's high jump with a mark of 5-7.25 (1.71m).
• Junior Majid Abuaun (Rocky River, Ohio) bested the field in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:53.93.
• Emily Razo won the women's 5,000 meters in 20:13.57.
• Junior Bram de Raedt (Houthalen-Helchteren, Belgium) captured the men's 400-meters hurdles in a career-best time of 53.07.
• Junior Kavel Ritchie (Spanish Town, Jamaica) bested the field in the women's long jump with a leap of 18-9.25 (5.72m).
• Junior La'Kasja Edwards (Alliance, Ohio) registered a mark of 151-0 (46.04m) to triumph in the women's discus.
• The men's 4x100 relay team of sophomore Garrett Tiller (Streetsboro, Ohio), Jordan and junior Rennie Gittens, Jr. (Miami, Fla.) and Andrew Styles took the title in 40.36.
• Griffiths won the women's hammer invitational on the strength of the fourth-best mark in outdoor program history (205-1/62.52m).
• Boes and junior Victoria Kuol (Centerville, Ohio) placed second and third, respectively, in the women's elite hammer with marks of 192-2 (58.57m) and 180-3 (54.96m). Boes' throw represented a career-best mark.
• Graham and junior Christopher Vance (Parma, Ohio) finished second and third in the men's hammer invitational with marks of 218-2 (66.51m) and 204-8 (62.40m).
AKRON GARNERS MAC INDOOR POSTSEASON HONORS: Akron assistant coach Randy Overby was tabbed the Mid-American Conference Men's Assistant Coach of the Year after Akron captured back-to-back indoor team titles and its fourth consecutive overall league crown.
Brook Boes was selected as the MAC Women's Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet, after sweeping the throwing events winning the women's shot put (49-11.25/15.22m) and weight throw (68-4.50/20.84m).
Andrew Styles was honored as the MAC Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet after winning the 200M (21.67) and 400m (47.99) and anchoring the winning 4x400 relay (3:16.25).
Junior Megan Hipple (Warren, Ohio) was tabbed the MAC Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet after a pair of All-MAC performances winning the women's 3K (9:18.79) and placing second in the 5K (16.03.86).
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams have garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2026 outdoor season as the Zips are rated among the Top 30 in the Event Squad rankings for nine events released on May 12, 2026, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron is rated 11th nationally in the men's hammer and in the women's hammer, 13th in the men's discus and men's shot put, 18th in the women's discus, 19th in the men's pole vault, 20th in the women's pole vault and 27th in the women's shot put and, in the women's, triple jump.
ZIPS RANKED AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2026 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron have five individual student-athletes ranked in the Top 50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) for the 2026 outdoor campaign as Owen Wendl is 24th in the men's shot put (62-1/18.92m) and 45th in the men's discus (186-10/56.94m).
Additionally, Lane Graham is 27th in the men's hammer (219-11/67.03m), Gabrielle Griffiths is 31st in the women's hammer (205-1/62.52m), Amari Noble is 37th in the men's discus (189-11/57.90m) and Kaden Rambatt is 49th in the men's pole vault (17-3.50/5.27m).
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips have added 24 overall top five performances and seven school-record marks in program history to the record book during the 2026 outdoor campaign.
