MUNCIE, Ind. – For fifth time in program history, and first since 2019, the University of Akron track and field team captured the men's and women's outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships outdistancing the field on Saturday (May 16).
The Akron men's squad won the men's title with 212 points, which was 63.50 points ahead of second place Eastern Michigan.
The Zips claimed the women's crown with 135.50 points, 22 points in front of rival Kent State.
Akron head coach Kendra Reimer-Gonzales was tabbed as the MAC Men's and Women's Coach of the Year.
Individually, redshirt senior Brook Boes (Tiffin, Ohio) was named the MAC Women's Track and Field Most Valuable Performer, while redshirt freshman Mercy Jebitok (Kapsabet, Kenya) was honored as the league's Freshman Track Performer of the Year.
On the men's side, junior Andrew Styles (Freeport, Bahamas) was selected as the MAC Men's Track and Field Most Valuable Performer, while freshman Noah Nyageo (Kitale, Kenya) pulled in MAC Freshman Track Performer of the Year accolades.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Styles captured a pair of individual titles on the day winning the men's 400 meters in a career-best time of 46.22 before triumphing in the men's 200 meters in career-best effort of 20.70. His effort in the 400 meters is the No. 2 time in outdoor program history.
• Freshman Jackline Nanjala (Kitale, Kenya) won her third MAC championship crossing the line first in a career-best time of 52.86, the No. 2 performance in outdoor program history.
• Jebitok captured her second league crown finishing first in the women's 5,000 meters in 16:12.93.
• Nyageo bested the field in the men's 5,000 meters for his second career league title in a time of 14:30.61.
• Junior AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) earned Second Team All-MAC honors with a runner-up performance in the men's 200 meters in 20.83.
• Junior Jordan Thompson-Seay (Bratenahl, Ohio) garnered Second Team All-MAC accolades placing second in the men's high jump with a career-best mark of 6-6.75 (2.00m).
• The men's 4x400 relay squad of junior Braylyn Farrington (Alabaster, Ala.), Jordan, freshman Tayven Crump (Vandalia, Ohio) and Styles won the race in 3:09.47.
• The men's 4x100 relay team of junior Rennie Gittens, Jr. (Miami, Fla.), Jordan, sophomore Garrett Tiller (Streetsboro, Ohio) and Styles crossed the line second in 40.09.
• The women's 4x400 relay team of seniors Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) and McKenzie McNitt (Cleveland, Ohio), sophomore Mariyah Moore (Cleveland, Ohio) and Nanjala earned a runner-up finish in a time of 3:39.61.
