Akron Splits Opening Day of Marshall March Madness Tournament

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Akron Zips split the opening day doubleheader at the Marshall March Madness Tournament, defeating Canisius 3-0 before falling the Marshall 9-1 in the nightcap on Friday.
GAME 1 vs Canisius
Akron (7-14) starting pitcher Macy Walters was dominant on Friday, hurling a two-hit shutout to lead the Akron Zips past the Golden Griffins 3-0. Walters (3-6) threw a complete game, facing 26 batters while giving up only two hits, while walking two and striking out two.
At the plate, the Zips seven total hits were paced by Meagan Lee, who went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Sophia Wygast and Lily Sullivan recorded the Zips RBIs, one each as Wygast used a 1-for-3 performance. Brooke Sivek, Andrea Day and Delaney Jenkinson also scattered base hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Akron managed to push across two runs in the inning.
The Zips also added a run in the fifth inning to complete their scoring in the ballgame.
GAME NOTES
» Walters tossed a two-hit shutout for the Zips.
» Lee compiled three base hits in the game for Akron.

GAME 2 vs Marshall
Lee went 2 for 3 for the Akron Zips in a 9-1 loss to the Marshall Thundering Herd. Sullivan compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Sivek scored the Zips lone run on a 1-for-3 effort. Day rounded out the Zips hits with a 1-for-2 performance.
Sydney Selker (0-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Akron (7-15).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 3-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron got an RBI single from Sullivan, scoring Brooke Sivek from second base. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as Marshall added six runs to their tally on the way to a 9-1 final.
