Big Games from Lyles and Scott Not Enough in Akron's Loss to Texas Tech

TAMPA, Fla. - Amani Lyles totaled 26 points and Shammah Scott added 20, but the Akron men's basketball team fell to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 91-71 at Benchmark International Arena Friday.
It marked the first time an Akron squad featured a pair of 20+ scorers in an NCAA Tournament Div. 1 game while Lyles' 26 points set a program record for scoring in a Div. 1 NCAA Tournament game.

Lyles and Scott's stellar scoring performances led the Zips (29-6) in the contest. Lyles tacked on two steals and two blocks. Evan Mahaffey also helped out with eight points, six rebounds and two steals.
Tavari Johnson set the single-season assists record after finishing the contest with 6 assist to finish the season with 176, surpassing Alex Abreu's (2012-13) 173.

Mahaffey pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead the Akron offense which grabbed 11 boards and turned them into 19 second chance points.
How It Happened
Akron struggled out of the gate, falling behind 40-35 heading into halftime.
Texas Tech kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 48-35 advantage before Akron went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Scott's layup, to shrink the deficit to 48-41 with 17:04 to go in the contest. Texas Tech responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 91-71. Akron took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 36 points in the lane.
