Zips fall 9-1 and 8-3 on Opening Day

Conway, S.C. - The Akron softball opened the 2026 season at the Kickin' Chicken Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina as the Zips dropped a pair games against No. 8/9 Arkansas Razorbacks (9-1) and Coastal Carolina (8-3) on Friday.
GAME 1 vs Arkansas --Despite scoring the first run of the season for an early 1-0 advantage, the No. 8/9 Arkansas Razorbacks sere able to outlast the Zips 9-1 after plating six runs in the final two innings.  The Zips generated a pair of hits as Sophia Wygast and Meagan Lee posted 1 for 3 performances. Wygast recorded the Zips lone RBI
Madie Jamrog (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Akron (0-1), throwing five complete innings and allowing five runs on eight hitsÂ
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Akron got an RBI single from Wygast, scoring B. Sivek from third base. The Zips were unable to hold the lead, as Arkansas scored nine times over the remaining five innings to grab the 9-1 win.
GAME NOTES

GAME 2 vs. Coastal Carolina -- Andrea Day lead te Akron offense in a game two setback (8-3) to the tournament hosts, Day scattered tree of the Zips' eight hits (3 for 4) with an RBI and was the only multi-hit performance for the Zips.Â
Macy Walters (0-1) got the start for Akron (0-1) and took the loss, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing six runs on six hits.
In addition to her three hits, Day had an RBI to lead the Zips. M. McGee put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI. Me. Lee also contributed for Akron, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Akron got an RBI single from Day, scoring B. Sivek from third base.
The Zips lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the second trailing 2-1. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Lee, which brought the score level at 2-2.
Coastal Carolina busted up the tie and grabbed a 4-2 lead moving into the sixth, when Akron narrowed the gap to 4-3. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as Coastal Carolina added four runs to their tally on the way to an 8-3 final.
