Zips fall in DH at Raleigh Times Tourney, Lee leads offense

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips dropped a doubleheader on the first day of the Raleigh Times Tournament hosted by NC State on Friday. Akron fell 10-7 to providence and 4-1 to Illinois.
GAME 1 vs PROVIDENCE
The Akron Zips fell 10-7 in an eight-inning matchup to the Providence Friars as sophomore Maddelynn Lee (1-2) took the loss in the circle for Akron (4-8).
Offensively, the Zips were led by Meagan Lee, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Sophia Wygast, followed with a home run and three RBIs, while Katie Cantrell had one hit in three trips to the plate, adding a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 7-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run groundout off the bat of Wygast.
The Zips kept the deficit at 7-4 before tying the score in the sixth. Akron scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a freshman Kylie Bailey, which evened the score at 7-7. Providence then scored three times over the remaining two innings to break the tie and grab the 10-7 win.
GAME NOTES
» Akron's highest scoring inning was the fifth, when it pushed four runs across.
» Akron pitchers faced 41 Providence hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and 13 fly balls while striking out two.
» The Zips drew eight walks from Providence pitching.

GAME 2 vs ILLINOIS
Though they had plenty of opportunities, Akron struggled to cash them in, leaving 10 Zips on base in a 4-1 loss to Illinois.
Macy Walters (1-3) started and took the loss in the circle for Akron (4-9). The right-hander went six innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on eight hits, allowing two walks and striking out one. Maddelynn Lee was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.
Offensively, the Zips were paced by senior Meagan Lee, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Lily Sullivan also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Senior Brooke Sivek collected two hits in four trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 4-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the seventh inning. Freshman Kenzie Gatti came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
