Men's Soccer Heads to Cleveland State for Final Regular Season Nonconference Match
October 19 | Men's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio — The Akron men's soccer team does not have to travel far for their final regular season nonconference match, as they will head to Cleveland State for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Tuesday, October 20.
Both teams are very familiar with each other, as this will be the 59th meeting in the all-time series. The Zips own a 43-11-4 record against the Vikings and first met in 1955 during Akron's inaugural varsity season.
CSU's head coach, Sinisa Ubiparipovic, is in his eighth season at the helm of the Vikings and is one of the greatest players in Akron history. Graduating in 2006, the Bosnia and Herzegovina native was a two-time All-American for then coach Caleb Porter scoring 42 goals, including a career-high 17 as a junior. He was named the 2006 MAC Player of the Year and became the first-ever player from Akron to be drafted in the MLS SuperDraft, going 33rd overall to the New York Red Bulls in 2007. Ubiparipovic was inducted into Akron's Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
The Zips (7-1-4) are coming off a 1-1 draw against Providence in their first-ever trip to The Ocean State. Down 1-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining, Matt Dreas buried the game-tying goal to help Akron earn a point in the BIG EAST standings. Remi Agunbiade leads the offensive attack with four goals, while Dreas became the seventh Zip to have scored multiple goals this season.
The Vikings sit at 6-4-3 on the season and are coming off a 2-1 loss at Wright State following three consecutive victories over Horizon League opponents. Freshman Domenic Ruggiero leads the conference in goals (7) and points (15), while Aleksander Kolar comes in with four shutouts in net.
Last season, Akron defeated Cleveland State, 1-0, at FirstEnergy Stadium. Jack Roman notched his first career goal in the contest.
