Farrel Ngongang celebrates with Thomas O'Rourke following his game winner against Cleveland State.
Ngongang Comes Through With Late Game Winner Against Cleveland State
October 20 | Men's Soccer
CLEVELAND, Ohio — It seems almost routine for the Akron men's soccer team.
Tied 2-2 against nonconference rival Cleveland State in the 84th minute, Farrel Ngongang slid the ball into the back of a net after a cross from Aiden Benitez set up by Thomas O'Rourke to deliver the Zips a 3-2 victory at Krenzler Field.
It marked the seventh game-winning or tying goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in a match this season.
Akron bounced back after an early deficit in the match. They found themselves down 1-0 just 68 seconds into the match off a free kick but tied it up 11 minutes later on a Remi Agunbiade penalty kick goal following a foul in the box.
Agunbiade scored again on a beautiful header just three minutes after his goal, but it was called off after video review determined he pushed off a defender as he was leaping into the air.
In the 34th minute, Ngongang buried a loose ball in the box to break the tie and make it 2-1 where it would stand at the intermission.
A costly error by the Zips once again knotted the score in the 67th minute. Brett Kaminski initially handled a shot on goal, but it slipped through his hands and into the right corner of the net for the Vikings' second score.
Tyler Morck was the lone Akron player to register a shot on goal following CSU's score before Ngongang's match capper.
Kaminski made three saves in net, including one with four minutes to go. The Zips outshot the Vikings, 13-6, and had eight corner kick opportunities.
