Zips to Make First-Ever Trip to Rhode Island Against Providence
October 15 | Men's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio — The Akron men's soccer team is set to make their first-ever trip to Rhode Island, as they will face Providence in a BIG EAST matchup on Friday, October 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
This will be only the second all-time meeting between the programs, as the Zips tied the Friars, 3-3, back in 2023 which was their first year in the BIG EAST.
The Zips (7-1-3) are coming off a gutsy, 1-1 draw with then-No. 6 Creighton on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. In the 80th minute, they salvaged the tie after Matthew Paiva scored on a penalty kick despite the Zips playing with only 10 men the majority of the second half due to a Remi Agunbiade red card. Paiva also earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors, while goalkeeper Brett Kaminski logged a career-high six saves to earn a spot on the conference's Weekly Honor Roll.
Providence (5-4-2) is coming off a 3-3 tie against Villanova after fending off a 2-0 deficit. Brian Garrepy is fourth in the conference with seven goals, while Angelo Ventrella is tied for second in the country with eight assists.
As for the BIG EAST standings, Akron sits in third in the Midwest Division behind Creighton and Xavier, while the Friars are tied for fifth in the East Division.
