AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron men's soccer team fell to St. John's, 2-1, on Friday (Oct. 3) at home at FirstEnergy Stadium.
How it Happened
The contest was a physical one from the start as the two teams were whistled for nine first-half fouls in a back-and-forth opening stanza.
Akron took a 1-0 lead when redshirt sophomore Nathan Ferguson (Glen Carbon, Ill.) recorded his first goal of the season in the 39th minute (38:31), assisted by freshman Jose Pedro (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Jack Roman (Canfield, Ohio).
The physicality began to ramp up in the second half, but the Zips held the momentum in the match until the Red Storm leveled the match on a goal from Gabe Smyth at the 71:39 mark, assisted by Ivar Na Aga and Julian Jakopovic.
St. John's then scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on Andrew Porucznik's 85th-minute goal (84:32), assisted by Gabin Thomelier.
Game Notes
- Redshirt senior GK Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) totaled three saves for the Zips out of 10 total Red Storm shots.
- Akron recorded three shots on goal.
- Ferguson, Pedro and Roman each posted a team-high two shots in the match.
