AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron women's soccer limited the scoring opportunities in the run of play to Mid-American Conference leader Western Michigan, but a pair of first half set-piece goals propelled the Broncos to a 3-0 triumph past the Zips on Thursday (Oct. 23) at FirstEnergy Stadium.
How it Happened
June Mullen netted what proved to be the game-winning tally for Western Michigan in the 20th minute (19:15) sending home a shot off a corner kick from Drew Martin.
A corner kick resulted in the second goal for the Broncos at the 28:20 mark off an own goal.
Abby Smothers capped the scoring with a tally in the 87th minute (86:38) off assists from Martin and Justina L'Esperance.
Redshirt freshman GK Ariana Vakos (Avon, Ohio) led Akron with three saves.Â
Game Notes
- The Zips limited the Broncos under their season averages for shots (12.7) and shots on goal (6.8), as the Akron defensive unit held Western Michigan to three second-half shots, including only one on frame.
- Junior Jordanne Oberhaus (Wadsworth, Ohio) recorded a team-best one shot for Akron.
- Sophomore Kailyn Biecker (Wadsworth, Ohio), freshmen Luisa Fragnoli (Medina, Ohio) and Addison Hall (Manchester, Conn.) and sophomore Allie McMillen (Shreve, Ohio) all went a full 90 minutes in the match for the Zips.
