AKRON, Ohio - On the strength of a hat trick from redshirt senior Emil Jaaskelainen (Bolton, England) and a brace from redshirt freshman Nathan Ferguson (Glen Carbon, Ill.) the University of Akron men's soccer team garnered an 8-0 shutout win over Saint Francis on Tuesday (Sept. 24) at FirstEnergy Stadium.
How it Happened
The Zips scored what proved to be the game-winning tally on Jaaskelainen's fifth-minute goal (4:30) off assists from redshirt senior Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) and senior Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal (Carbondale, Ill.).
Clapier pushed the lead to 2-0 with his third goal of the year at the 20:25 mark courtesy of assists from redshirt senior Beto Ydrach (Orlando, Fla.) and senior Jonas Buechte (Rantigen, Germany).
Jaaskelainen headed home his second goal of the night in the 24th minute (23:22) mark off a corner kick from Buechte.
Freshman Remi Agunbiade (Toronto, Ontario) netted his first career goal at the 31:34 mark to give Akron a 4-0 lead off assists from Jaaskelainen and junior Stefan Dobrijevic (Uniontown, Ohio).
The Zips took a 5-0 edge into halftime when Ferguson scored his first career goal in the 43rd minute (42:32) with assists from junior Maximus Barboto (Wayne, N.J.) and redshirt freshman Caleb Borneo (Morgantown, W.Va.).
Freshman Simon Guardiero (Guelph, Ontario) added his first career tally at the 46:43 mark to extend the Zips' lead to 6-0. Earning an assist on the score was redshirt senior Victor Gaulmin (Guipavas, France).
Jaaskelainen capped the hat trick finding the back of the net in the 56th minute (55:37) courtesy of assists from Gaulmin and sophomore Josh Hardin (Maple Valley, Wash.).
Ferguson rounded out the scoring on the evening with his first career multi-goal effort with a tally at the 64:33 mark off assists from Dobrijevic and freshman Connor Filsinger (Frankfurt, Germany).
Game Notes
- Redshirt junior GK Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) piled up two saves for the Zips out of eight total Red Flash shots en route to collecting the shutout.
- Akron out shot Saint Francis on the evening, 25-8, including 12-2 in shots on goal
- Jaaskelainen, Clapier and Ferguson posted five, four and four shots, respectively, for the Zips.
