Zips Fall in 4-set Match to Liberty

GUAYNABO, PR --The Akron volleyball team fell on Saturday as the Liberty Lady Flames posted a four set (20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 17-25) win.
The non-conference loss moves Akron to 1-1 on the season.
The Zips offense was paced by Lauren Baker, who finished with 14 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .367, and by Emanouela Christodoulou, who had 12 kills. Defensively, Akron had two players reach double figures in digs as Vanessa Del Real had 17 and Martina Villani had 12. From the front row, Melisa Tore contributed five blocks.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips found themselves in an early deficit, dropping the first set 25-20. Akron trailed by as many as six points as Liberty grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 in a set that was tied up nine times before the Lady Flames took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 2 | Akron tied the match at 1-1 following a 25-21 victory in set two. The Zips never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Zips took over the lead. The Akron offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | Liberty responded to win set number three, putting Akron in a two sets to one hole. The Zips fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before losing the set 25-19.
SET 4 | Akron then fell in the fourth set 25-17 to finish off the match. The Zips trailed by as many as eight points as Liberty grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 and Akron wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up two times before the Lady Flames took over.

The Zips return to Akron to host the Zips Invitational from September 4-7.
