Akron Comeback Nets 2-1 Road Win at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The University of Akron women's soccer team on the strength of a pair of second-half goals fought back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to register a 2-1 triumph at Iona on Thursday (Aug. 15).
The Zips bested the Gaels in the first-ever meeting between the two schools and the season opener for both sides.
How it Happened
Iona took a 1-0 lead when Kendall Infantino scored in the 43rd minute, assisted by Marissa Graziano.
The Zips responded to tie the contest at one when sophomore Rachel Wenzel (Akron, Ohio) connected on her first career goal at the 65:01 mark off an assist from sophomore Shani Sirota (Raanana, Israel).
Redshirt senior Morgan Pentz (Broadview Heights, Ohio) delivered what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 80th minute goal striking a perfect free kick from just outside the box into the corner of the net.
Redshirt junior GK Penelope Cuirinier (Mionnay, France) pulled in a save in the game's final minute to secure the road victory for Akron.
Game Notes
- Cuirinier collected four saves for the Zips out of 13 total shots by the Gaels.
- Akron recorded six shots on goal, led by two from Wenzel.
- Pentz and Wenzel each registered a game-high three shots in the match.
- Each team posted 13 shots on the afternoon.
