Men's Basketball Announces 2024-25 Non-Conference Schedule
August 12 | Men's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio - The defending Mid-American Conference champions Akron Zips men's basketball team announced its non-conference schedule on Monday, August 12 with the Blue and Gold set for seven non-conference contests at James A. Rhodes Arena.
All times are to be announced.
Akron kicks off the 2024-25 season with a trip to Arkansas State on November 4 for the first leg of the MAC-SBC Challenge. The Zips went 1-1 in the challenge last season. The Red Wolves advanced to the SBC Championship game where they fell to James Madison.
The Zips return to the JAR to host Ohio Wesleyan of the North Coast Athletic Conference for the home opener on November 8 before traveling to California to face St. Mary's on November 12. The Gales went 26-8 overall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they fell to Grand Cayon in the First Round.
The Blue and Gold return to the JAR for a trio of games when it hosts the Akron Basketball Classic from November 22-24. The Zips will host Lamar, Nebraska-Omaha and Alabama State.
Akron continues its stay at the JAR with two more home games when Northern Kentucky and SUNY Brockport come ready to battle on December 3 and 7, respectively. Akron battled NKU last season on the road with the Zips coming away with a 77-76 victory after a last-second go-ahead dunk.
After the five-game homestand, the Zips depart for Wisconsin to take part in the MKE Tip-off on December 15 at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. The MKE Tip-off will feature a triple-header featuring the Zips battling Wisconsin while Northwestern takes on Georgia Tech and Loyola Chicago takes on San Francisco.
The state of Texas will feature the Blue and Gold next when Akron travels to El Paso, Texas, to battle in the Sun Bowl Invitational from December 20-21. The Zips will tackle Yale on December 20 and will face either host UTEP or Jackson State on December 21. Yale went 23-10 and 11-3 in Ivy League play and edged out Brown in the conference tournament final to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA Tournament, Yale upset No. 3 seed Auburn in the first round.
This will be the first time since 2016 that the Zips will take part in the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational. Akron went 2-0 to claim the invitational that season.
Akron closes 2024 with a road game at Princeton on December 30. The Tigers finished the 2023-24 season with a 24-5 overall record and a 12-2 record in the Ivy League with an appearance in the NIT.
The final non-conference game for the Zips will take place on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, when the second leg of the MAC-SBC Challenge commences at the JAR. Matchups will be based on real-time NET rankings and announced in January.
