Zips Split Twinbill against Kent State

KENT, Ohio -- The Akron Zips scattered 33 hits on Friday at Devine Diamond while earning a doubleheader split against Kent State, winning game one 9-4 before falling to a pair of KSU homeruns in the seventh to fall 9-8 on Friday.
GAME 1 | Akron 9, Kent State 4
Sophomore Meagan Lee strung together three hits to help lead the Akron Zips past the Kent State Golden Flashes 9-4 in game one.
Lee's three-hit day led the Zips offensively. Freshman Sophia Wygast compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks and two RBI. Walters also chipped in for Akron, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.
Freshman Macy Walters (9-9) got the win for Akron (23-28, 11-13). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on eight hits, allowing four walks and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the second inning. Wygast put Akron on the board with a leadoff home run off freshman Megan Nuechterlein.
The Zips kept the deficit at 2-1 before taking the lead in the third. Akron scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from senior K. Macintosh-Houlder, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Zips.
Akron kept Kent State without a run before building their lead to 5-2 the following inning.
The Golden Flashes gained ground, closing the gap to 5-4 until Akron added some insurance in the fifth. The Zips scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of senior Tiffany Stevens, bringing the Akron advantage to 6-4.
The Zips kept Kent State scoreless before expanding their lead to 9-4 the following inning. Akron scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Macintosh-Houlder. The score remained 9-4 for the rest of the game, as the Zips coasted to the win.

The Akron Zips took an 8-7 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hold on and fell 9-8 to the Kent State Golden Flashes.
Senior Cailey Joyce (5-9) came out of the bullpen for Akron (23-29, 11-14) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with four runs in the top of the first inning. Akron got a grand slam from freshman Sophia Wygast off of freshman Megan Nuechterlein, scoring all four of their runs in the inning.
The Golden Flashes then rallied to score five runs and take a 5-4 lead before the Zips got back on the board in the third. Akron managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Zips.
Akron kept Kent State without a run before expanding their lead to 7-5 the following inning. The Zips scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of freshman Lily Sullivan.
The Golden Flashes then tied up the ballgame at seven before Akron fought back to reclaim their advantage in the fifth inning. The Zips scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Meagan Lee, bringing the Akron advantage to 8-7. The Zips were unable to hold the lead, as Kent State scored two times over the remaining two innings to grab the 9-8 win.
