Lafferty Homers Twice - Kelley and Perkins Combine For 11 K's in Akron's 7-4 Win at CMU

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. Austin Lafferty hit two home runs while Jack Kelley and Sean Perkins combined for 11 strikeouts to help give the Zips a 7-4 win over Central Michigan on Friday.Â
Lafferty went 2-for-4 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with four RBI. Jack Poist added to the extra-base hit total with a triple and drew a walk. Max Bowman went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Charlie Schebler had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 on the day with a walk.
Kelley (2-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Akron (12-33, 7-15). The righty went seven innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out seven. Perkins tossed two scoreless innings while allowing two hits, with no walks and four strikeouts to earn the save.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the second inning. Akron plated two runs when Lafferty left the yard with Charlie Schebler aboard.
The Chippewas then rallied to score three runs and take a 4-2 lead before the Zips got back on the board in the fourth. Akron scored twice on Lafferty's two-run homer, which evened the score at 4-4.
That 4-4 tie turned into a 5-4 Akron lead in the fifth.
Akron held the Chippewas scoreless before building on their lead in the seventh inning. Nicky Sackett crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Zips, bringing the score to 6-4 in favor of Akron.
The Zips held Central Michigan without a run before increasing the lead to 7-4 in the ninth inning. Sackett came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.Â
