Zips Fall Twice to Ball State in Doubleheader on Saturday

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Akron Zips fell twice to Ball State in a doubleheader on Saturday to begin the series with the Cardinals.
GAME 1 | Ball State 5, Akron 1
Max Bowman went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI for the Akron Zips in a 5-1 loss to the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday.
Offensively, the Zips were led by Bowman, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Evan Bottone put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3.
Jared Schaeffer (0-6) got the start for Akron (6-26, 1-12) and took the loss. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Bowman put Akron on the board with a lead off home run. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as Ball State added three runs to their tally on the way to a 5-1 final.

Henry Hayman notched two extra-base hits, but the Akron Zips fell to the Ball State Cardinals 17-7 Saturday.
Hayman's two extra-base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day, and included a double, a home run, a walk, and two RBI. Bowman compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and three walks. Charle Rhee also contributed for the Zips, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding two RBI.
Spencer Atkins (0-6) started and took the loss on the mound for Akron (6-27, 1-13).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 4-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Sam Seeker came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.
The Zips deficit expanded to 11-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fourth inning. Akron scored twice on Hayman's two-run homer, which tightened the Cardinals lead to 11-3.
Ball State built their lead to 12-3 before the Akron offense got going, reducing that lead to 12-4 in the fifth. The Zips scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of Michael Sprockett.
The Cardinals expanded their lead to 16-4 before the Akron offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the eighth. The three-run frame for the Zips was punctuated by a two-run single off the bat of Rhee.Â
tightening the Ball State lead to 16-7. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as Ball State added one run to their tally on the way to a 17-7 final.
