Zips Return to Conference Action With Trip to Bowling Green

Akron, Ohio – The Akron baseball team returns to conference play when it travels to Bowling Green for three games starting Friday, March 22.

SCOUTING REPORT
The Falcons enter the series first in the Mid-American Conference as the only undefeated team left in conference play (6-0). No other team has more than four MAC wins. Bowling Green is 2-1 in home openers under head coach Kyle Hallock with wins in 2022 and 2023.
Bowling Green enters the home opener at .500 (8-8) on the season. This marks the first time BGSU has been .500 or better at the home opener since the 2008 season (.500, 7-7).
On Saturday (March 16), the Falcons scored 34 runs, just four shy of the program record all-time and the most runs by BGSU in a MAC game. On the year, Bowling Green is averaging 9.8 runs per game, which not only leads the Mid-American Conference, but is 16th in the nation. The run production has come in large part to home runs. BGSU is averaging 1.75 home runs per game which also leads the MAC and is tied for 27th in the country. The Falcons are among the ranks nationally for triples too, coming in at 40th in the nation with an average of 0.38 per game.
Through the first two weekends of the conference season, Bowling Green has gone 6-0 in the MAC, all on the road, and remains the only undefeated team left in the conference play. Despite playing the fewest games in the MAC overall (16), the Falcons lead the conference in runs (157) and are tied for second with Kent State in RBI (140), trailing Western Michigan (150) with both Kent State and Western Michigan having played 19 games. Among starters, hitters are only hitting .235 against Spencer Atkins who also has 17 strikeouts. Dawson Tourney leads the Zips with 21 strikeouts while Jared Schaeffer is close behind with 20.
LAST TIME OUT (MAR. 19, 2024)
DAYTON, Ohio - Austin Lafferty collected five RBI to help propel the Akron Zips over the Wright State Raiders 11-7 on Tuesday.
Lafferty went 2-for-5 with a triple in addition to his five RBI for the Zips. Charlie Schebler compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Max Bowman also contributed for Akron, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and two RBI.
Emmett Gillies (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Akron (5-14). The right-hander went one inning, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on one hit, allowing one walk and striking out one. Josiah Ross also made an impact on the mound for the Zips, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout.
The Zips got on the scoreboard starting in the second inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a three-run triple off the bat of Lafferty.
The Zips then held the Raiders scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Akron picked up two runs when a single from Lafferty brought home Andrew Horvath and Schebler, which brought the score to 7-0 in favor of the Zips.
Akron held Wright State without a run before building their lead to 9-0 the following inning. Akron recorded two runs, including one on a solo dinger from Schedbler.
The Raiders gained ground, closing the gap to 9-3 until Akron added some insurance in the fifth. Jack Poist crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Zips, bringing the Akron advantage to 10-3.
Wright State got within 10-5 until the Zips scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 11-5. Akron picked up a run on Schebler's one-out solo home run off of senior Wes Earles. Wright State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Zips still coasted to the 11-7 win.

PERKS OF THE JOB
Sean Perkins was named the MAC Pitcher of the Week on March 4 after picking up a win over No. 10/12 Duke.
Coming in down 2-1 against Duke in the second game of the series, Perkins pitched five innings of near-spotless baseball as the Zips defeated the No. 10/12 Blue Devils 4-3 on March 2. Throwing the final five innings, Perkins held his own with just two hits allowed along with one run and two strikeouts to earn the win. He sent Duke three-up-three down in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings and ended the ninth with a strikeout. Perkins also held Duke's hitters to a combined .118 batting average over the five innings of work.
ONE TO REMEMBER
Head coach Bryan Faulds collected his first win leading the Akron Zips in the second game of a doubleheader against Illinois on February 14. Down 4-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Akron battled to force extra-innings when Max Bowman sent a walk-off home run in the 11th inning to give the Zips a 5-4 victory.
