March 02 | Softball
GREENVILLE, S.C. --The Akron Zips needed eight innings to get the job done, but earned the 6-5 extra-innings victory over the Furman Paladins Saturday.
Sophomore Haley Croyle (1-5) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Akron (3-8). The right-hander went two shutout innings while giving up three hits, allowing one walk and striking out one.
Freshman Sophia Wygast led the way offensively for the Zips, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with two home runs, a walk and four RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Freshman Sydni Hoobler came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.
The Paladins failed to push any runs across before the Zips offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Akron scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Wygast, scoring sophomore Meagan Lee and freshman Lily Sullivan, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Zips.
Akron held Furman without a run before building their lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning. The Zips picked up a run on Wygast's one-out solo home run off senior Sierra Tufts.
The Paladins then evened up the game at five before Akron fought back to reclaim their advantage in the eighth inning. Freshman Delaney Jenkinson crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Zips, bringing the Akron advantage to 6-5. The score remained 6-5 for the rest of the game, as the Zips held on for the win.
