Seven Runs in The Ninth Pushes Akron Past Fordham, 14-7

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -The Akron Zips pushed across seven runs in the ninth inning to secure their second win of the season with a 14-7 victory over the Fordham Rams on Saturday.
Freshman Elijah Griffith (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Akron (2-1). The right-hander went two innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Senior Yassir Kahook also pitched well, going 2.1 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out one.
Senior Max Bowman led the way offensively for the Zips, going 3-for-5 in the ballgame with a double, a triple, a walk and two RBI. Junior Michael Sprockett compiled a 2-for-4 performance with two walks and four RBI. Senior Jack Poist supplied two RBI on a 2-for-4 day for Akron that featured a double and two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Akron scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Sprockett.
The Zips then held the Rams scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Bowman, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Zips.
Akron's lead had evaporated once the fifth inning came around and turned into a 6-4 Fordham advantage, when the Zips cut that deficit to 6-5.
Akron kept the Rams off the board before taking the lead in the seventh. The Zips notched two runs when a single from Poist brought home junior Henry Hayman and junior Fisher Pyatt, bringing the score to 7-6 in favor of Akron.
Fordham fired back to tie the game at seven before the Zips reclaimed a 14-7 advantage in the ninth inning. The Akron offense piled up seven runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of junior Ian Pennington and a two-run double from Pyatt. The score remained 14-7 for the rest of the game, as the Zips coasted to the win.
