Akron Falls to Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Akron softball opened the day with a win, but fell to Florida Gulf Coast in the second game of the FGCUÂ Tournament, 2-0.
Sophomore Haley Croyle (0-1) got the ball to start for Akron (1-1) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out two.
In the batter's box, the Zips were paced by sophomore Brooke Sivek, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Akron managed zero chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. The Zips last got a runner on third in the third, when Sivek made it 60 feet away from scoring with two outs.
GAME NOTES
» Akron pitchers faced 22 FGCU hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out two.
» Sivek led the Zips at the plate, going 1-for-2.
» FGCU was led offensively by junior Meagan Ricks, who went 2-for-2 with a home run and an RBI.
» Sparkman led the Eagles pitching staff, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings.
