AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron freshman Bismack Kipchirchir (Eldama Ravine, Kenya) is set to represent the Zips at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this Saturday (Nov. 23) at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Verona, Wis., at 11:10 a.m. ET.
Â
The women's 6K opens the championship at 10:20 a.m. ET followed by the men's 10K race, which is set for 11:10 a.m. ET
Kipchirchir becomes the third Akron runner to qualify and compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in program history, joining Marc Migliozzi, who ran in the title race in 2019, as well as Timothy Chesondin, who earned All-America accolades a season ago. He received an at-large selection on Nov. 16 and is one of 38 at-large individuals selected to participate in the championship. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their regions.
Earlier this week, Kipchirchir garnered All-Great Lakes Regional accolades when the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) unveiled its all-regional selections on Nov. 18.
A total of 225 men and 225 women from 100 men's and 105 women's institutions earned the distinction by finishing among the Top 25 runners at one of nine regional sites across the country.
Kipchirchir led the Zips' efforts at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by the Mid-American Conference on Nov. 15 traversing the 10K course in a career-best time of 29:15.4 to fourth overall and earn a berth into the NCAA Championships.
