ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 11th-ranked University of Akron rifle team battled No. 1 West Virginia and No. 13 Navy on Saturday (Jan. 27) down to the final shots before the Mountaineers proved their No 1 ranking is no accident by posting 4739 score, while Navy bested Akron, 4697-4696.

All five of the Zips designated smallbore team posted respectable scores ranging from 581 through 588 owned by senior Gavin Perkowski (Bolivar, Ohio). Turning in an impressive performance in the sling positions, sophomore Natalia Siek (Flemington, N.J.) fired an impressive 199 in the kneeling position which tied the school record

Junior Rachel Engels (Meridian, Idaho). fired a school-record score of 599 to lead the Zips' efforts in the air rifle.

Akron travels to Cambridge, Mass., to battle MIT and Norwich on Sunday (Feb. 4) at 10 a.m.
