UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The University of Akron track and field team garnered numerous strong performances, including 12 career-best marks, to highlight the Zips' efforts on the opening day of the Penn State National on Friday (Jan. 26).

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Redshirt junior Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) won the men's pole vault with a career-best clearance of 18-3.75 (5.58m). His performance is the No. 3 mark in indoor program history and third-best clearance in the NCAA this season.
• Freshman Sharon Chepchirchir (Kapsabet, Kenya) captured the women's 5,000 meters in a career-best time of 16:57.32. Her effort also stands as the No. 3 time in indoor program history.
• Redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Griffiths (Fort Worth, Texas) placed second in the women's weight throw with a career-best mark of 58-3.75 (17.77m).
• Redshirt senior Jabari Neal-Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished fourth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 64-10.75 (19.78m).
