AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams travels to University Park, Pa., this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27, as the Zips compete at the Penn State National hosted by Penn State.
UP NEXT: The 54-event meet will commence with the men's heptathlon on Friday at 11:30 a.m., before the mixed mile kicks off action on the track at 3 p.m. Competition on Saturday opens with second-day action in the men's heptathlon at 10 a.m., before concluding with the men's 4x400 invitational at 4:35 p.m.
Competing teams include Akron, Binghamton, Bowling Green, Bucknell, Buffalo, Canisius, Colgate, Coppin State, Duquesne, FDU, Geneva, Georgetown, Guelph, Hampton, James Madison, John Carroll, Lake Erie, Liberty, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Morgan State, Norfolk State, North Carolina, Ohio, Penn, Penn State, Pitt, Princeton, St. Francis, Towson, UMBC, Villanova, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Western Ontario.

A WEEK AGO: The University of Akron track and field team posted 10 victories as part of 21 overall top-three performances in the annual Akron-Kent State Dual on Friday (Jan. 19).
• Sophomore Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) won the men's mile in a time of 4:12.59 before later capturing the men's 3,000 meters in a time of 8:17.92.
• Redshirt senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned the title in the men's 400 meters in 47.21.
• Redshirt senior Jabari Neal-Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) registered the fourth-best mark in indoor program history to win the men's weight throw with a career-best mark of 65-8 (20.03m).
• Freshman Sharon Chepchirchir (Kapsabet, Kenya) took the title in the women's 3,000 meters in a career-best time of 9:57.93.
• Freshman Mary Munga (Nyandarua, Kenya) crossed the line first in the women's mile in a career-best time of 5:08.43.
• Junior Adaeze Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) won the women's 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.84.
• Junior Jamari Davis (Ontario, Calif.) bested the field in the women's 60 meters in a career-best time of 7.61.
• Junior Joy Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) won the women's 200 meters in a career-best time of 24.44.
• Junior Cassidy Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) eclipsed a career-best mark of 12-6 (3.81m) to win the women's pole vault.
• The women's 4x400 'A' relay team finished second in a time of 3:50.75, while the men's 4x400 relay squad also placed second in 3:23.81.
AKRON DUO EARNS MAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES: University of Akron track and field redshirt junior Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) and Charles Sanders were honored by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday, Jan. 24.
Sanders was tabbed as the league's Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while Garretson was named the MAC's Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2023 outdoor season as the Zips rated in the Event Squad rankings released on May 15, 2023, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranked fifth nationally in the men's hammer, 20th in the men's pole vault and 30th in the men's shot put.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2024 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has a pair of student-athletes ranked in the top-50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) for the 2024 indoor campaign, including, Hunter Garretson, who is seventh in the nation in the men's pole vault (17-9.25/5.42m).
Additionally, Charles Sanders is rated 19th in the men's 400 meters (47.21).
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Hunter Garretson was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2023 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA was presented with the award during the presentation. He became the second Zip to earn the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
GARRETSON GARNERS ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES: Hunter Garretson garnered First-Team All-America accolades on the strength of a second-place showing (18-8.25/5.70m) at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Texas on June 7. William Gross garnered Second-Team All-America honors placing 16th in the men's hammer (221-3/67.45m), while Charles Sanders and Brian Masai were named Honorable Mention All-America recipients in the men's 400 meters and 5,000 meters, respectively.
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips have added one overall top-five performance in program history to the record book during the 2024 indoor campaign.
