Akron Volleyball Prepares for Two Matches Against Rival Kent State

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team will host rival Kent State University in two matches to continue Mid-American Conference (MAC) play on Thursday and Friday at James A. Rhodes Arena.
GAME INFO
James A. Rhodes Arena will play host as the Zips (6-7, 1-1 MAC) face off against the Golden Flashes (4-10, 0-3 MAC) on Thursday and Friday. Matches on each day will begin at 6 p.m.
Fans can follow the action via live stats on the Akron Athletics App or GoZips.com. Both matches will be available to watch on ESPN+.
ABOUT THE ZIPS
Akron volleyball is coming off the opening of MAC play with a split of the two matches against Ohio with a win on Friday (3-1) and dropping 1-3 on Saturday. On the weekend, Akron had four players in double-digit kills, paced by Faith Johnson (24). Genevieve Hara (19), Melisa Tore (17) and Ellen Kinnaird (15) also contributed to the Zips attack. Eliska Vytiskova led both matches with assists, totaling 71. Vytiskova is also still nationally in the top 10 for both service aces (tied for 2nd in all of Division I) and aces per set (7th). Vanessa Del Real also led the team with 35 digs and 6 aces in the opening of conference play.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Kent State University will enter the two matches with Akron with 4 straight losses to Youngstown State (1-3), Buffalo (0-3 and 2-3), and Ohio (0-3). Including this Friday's match, the Golden Flashes will have played five matches in an eight-day span, all against MAC teams. In their most recent match on Tuesday, sophomore Mackenzie McGuire had 10 kills, while senior Bryn Roberts and graduate student Burgundy Walters led the defense with seven digs and three blocks, respectively.

The Zips will host another pair of MAC matches next week. They'll face Eastern Michigan on October 5, with first serve at 6 p.m. as a part of Homecoming Week. Friday October 6 will feature Akron hosting Central Michigan for Alumni Day at 6 p.m.
