Volleyball Opens Conference Play Against the Bobcats

AKRON, Ohio – This weekend the University of Akron volleyball team will open MAC competition with two matches on the road against Ohio University on Friday and Saturday.
GAME INFO
Friday night the Zips will have first serve in Athens at 7 p.m. for their first MAC match of the season. Then on Saturday the Bobcats and the Zips have first serve at 4 p.m. from OU's Convocation Center.

ABOUT THE ZIPS
After the non-conference portion of Akron's schedule, freshman setter Eliska Vytiskova is currently ranked 2nd in aces (32 total) and 5th in aces per set (.7) across all NCAA Division I institutions. As a team, Akron Volleyball currently ranks 3rd in aces (113) and 7th in aces per set (2.4) [rankings current for all matches through Sept 20]. Faith Johnson registered double-doubles in both of last week's matches, with a match-high 18 kills and 10 digs against Youngstown State on Thursday and 15 kills and 12 digs on Friday at home against Cleveland State. On the defensive side, Vanessa Del Real had a combined 33 digs in the two matches.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Ohio University begins conference play at a 5-7 record and coming off three straight losses at the Cyclone Invitational against Drake (2-3), #23 Iowa State (0-3), and UCSB (1-3) last weekend. Caitlin O'Farrell leads the Bobcats averaging 3.38 kills per set and Sam Steele has 16 services on the season while Parker Kwiatkowski is their strong setter with 257 assists. Defensively, Steele has 236 digs (tied for 11th in all of NCAA Division I institutions). O'Farrell (44), Anna Kharchynska (41), and Elizabeth Hoerlein (37) lead Ohio in blocks.

The Akron Zips will host rival Kent State for a two-match series at home. Both Thursday's and Friday's match will begin at 6 p.m. at the James A. Rhodes Arena.
