Horvath, Arrivo Lead Zips to Lopsided Win on Education Day

AKRON, Ohio – Sophomore C Andrew Horvath (Aurora, Ohio) and graduate SS Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) distributed five of the Zips' seven hits as the Akron defeated Youngstown State 13-4 on Education Day at Canal Park on Tuesday.
Horvath led the offense with a 3-of-5 performance, including a double four RBI and two runs scored, while Arrivo went 2-of-4 from the plate with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Junior 1B Greyson Droste (Fishers, Ind.) and freshman 3B Caleb Jenkins (Hilliard, Ohio) added base hits as Droste scored once and Jenkins plated two runs.
Akron (19-33) started the scoring in the first inning as sophomore OF Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) stole home while junior OF Jack Poist ( Hoover, Ala.) was caught in a rundown between first and second. Youngstown State (17-34) answered in the second inning with a pair of runs after a triple and double off the right and left field walls, respectively.
In the third inning, the Zips loaded the bases and scored on a walk before Arrivo launched a bases clearing triple to left field for three RBI. Horvath followed with a two RBI double to left field. Jenkins plated the final run with a base hit to left, scoring Horvath. Akron led 8-2 after three innings.
The Zips tacked on two runs in the fourth as Horvath singled to centerfield pushing Arrivo and Poist across the plate for a 10-2 advantage. A wild pitch with the bases full and a sacrifice flyout to right field by Poist allowed the Zips to take a 10-run lead by the end of the fifth inning. The Zips scored their final run in the sixth as
Freshman starting pitcher Joe Roth (Austintown, Ohio) earned the win, throwing 7.0 innings and allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Junior RHP Brady Biglin (Crestline, Ohio) threw the eighth and sophomore RHP Jacob Beall (West Chester, Ohio) finished the game.

The Zips final homestand of the season will be played at Skeeles Field as Akron hosts Ohio for the final #MACtion series of the 2023 campaign on Thursday through Saturday, May 18-20. First pitch for the series opener is slated for 3 p.m.
