Akron Pushes Notre Dame to Limit in Suspended Series Opener

South Bend, Ind. – In a game that play was suspended due to weather, the Akron battled Notre Dame to a 1-1 stalemate after five innings of play as junior starting pitcher Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.) held a no-hitter through 4.2 innings.
Akron started the scoring in the fifth inning as Horvath bunted for a base hit and scored on an Irish fielding error. Notre Dame answered in the bottom half of the inning while snapping Tortorella's no-hitter with a double of the left field wall to tie the game 1-1.
The game was suspended in the top of the sixth inning, as the Zips scattered seven hits to the Fighting Irish's RBI double. Jack Poist led the Zips with a 2-of-3 performance, while Jack Firestone, Nick Arrivo, Sam Seeker, Breydan Cavey and Andrew Horvath collected Akron's hits. Horvath scored the Zips' lone run.
When play resumed on Saturday, Notre Dame scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on four hits and an Akron throwing error for a 5-1 advantage.
Akron plated a run in the final inning as Max Bowman singled down the leftfield line to open the final frame. He moved to second on a Horvath single and score on a RBI groundout from Hara.

The Zips will play the regular scheduled game two at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
