Akron Dismantles Northern Illinois in Opening Game of Series, 19-7

DeKalb, Ill. – The Akron Zips offense exploded for 21 hits en route to a 19-7 dismantling of the Northern Illinois Huskies in the opening game of the series at Owens Park on Friday.
Eight Zips registered multi-hit performances paced by senior SS Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas) on a 4-of-5 performance with a double, RBI and run scored. Sophomore OF Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) followed with a perfect 3-of-3 showing from the plate with a walk, while stealing four bases and scoring three times.
Juniors IF Max Bowman (Gahanna, Ohio), IF Breydan Cavey (Medina, Ohio), DH Jack Poist (Hoover, ala.), sophomores IF Ty Stolarski (Medina, Ohio), C Andrew Horvath (Aurora, Ohio) and OF Sam Seeker (Norton, Ohio) collected two hits each as Bowman and Stolarski posted 2-of-3 efforts. Bowman cleared the bases in the ninth inning, launching a grand slam over the centerfield wall for four RBI while Stolarski scored two runs and recorded an RBI. Seeker sent a solo shot over the right field fence and Cavey doubled.
Akron junior starting pitcher Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the win, hurling six innings and allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Akron plated six runs in the first two innings, scoring two runs on two hits in the first and four runs on five hits in the second for a 6-0 advantage. Akron pushed another run across the plate before the Huskies tallied a run as Pennington scored on a wild pitch after earning a walk. Northern Illinois scored in the bottom half of the frame to make it 7-1.
Northern Illinois outscored Akron 6-4 in the fifth inning as Akron still held an 11-7 advantage and held the Huskies scoreless for the remainder of the game. Akron pushed eight runs across the plate in the final four innings, including five runs in the ninth.
