AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team will traverse the country this weekend as the Zips are slated to compete in five meets from Ohio to California.
UP NEXT: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams will compete in five meets this week as most of the Zips' squad travels to California.
Akron's middle-distance and distance runners will commence competition for the Zips competing in at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif., on Thursday and Friday, April 13-14 as well as the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State on Saturday, April 15.
The three-day event will kick off on Thursday, April 13, with the 100 meters as part of the women's heptathlon at 11 a.m. ET before the meet concludes with the men's 1,500 meters at 1:40 am ET on Sunday, April 16.

The Zips then will split their efforts between the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (April 13) and Beach Invitational (April 14-15) along with the Mt. Sac Relays (April 13-15) hosted by Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.
The running of the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays, which is in its 63rd year, opens with the 100 meters as part of the men's decathlon on Wednesday, April 12, and concludes with the women's 4x400 relay at 8:25 p.m. ET on Saturday.

The men's hammer at 11 a.m. ET will start the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Thursday with the final event being the men's 4x400 relay at 9 p.m. ET.

The Beach Invitational begins on Friday with the women's 10,000 meters at 11:30 a.m. ET, before the meet concludes opening-day action with the men's javelin at 6:45 p.m. ET. The final day of the competitions opens with the men's high jump at 12 p.m. ET, before action on the track rounds out with the men's 4x400 relay meters at 10 p.m. ET.

Additionally, Akron's throwers will visit Athens, Ohio to participate in the Cherry Blossom Invitational hosted by Ohio on Saturday, April 15.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams has garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2023 outdoor season as the Zips are rated in the Event Squad rankings released on April 10, 2023, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranks eighth nationally in the men's hammer and 16th in the men's pole vault and 19th in the men's shot put.
Additionally, the Zips are rated eighth in the latest men's Great Lakes Regional poll.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2023 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has a trio of student-athletes ranked in the top-50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2023 outdoor campaign, including, redshirt sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio), who is third in the nation in the men's pole vault (18-8.75/5.71m).
Also rated among the top-50 is redshirt sophomore William Gross (Newfane, N.Y.) (37th in the men's hammer – 213-8/65.13m) and sophomore Oscar Prieto (Barcelona, Spain) (31st in the men's pole vault – 17-0.75/5.20m).
GROSS NAMED MAC FIELD OF THE WEEK: Akron's William Gross was honored by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday, April 12.
Gross captured the men's hammer at the Northeast Ohio Open on April 7 with a season-best mark of 213-8 (65.13m). His performance stands as the No. 2 mark in the MAC this season and is a 5.12m season improvement. His throw is the No. 18 mark in the NCAA East Region and is rated 37th overall in the NCAA this season. The effort stands as his best throw since May 2021.
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Hunter Garretson was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2023 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA was presented with the award during the presentation on March 11. He became the second Zip to earn the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
GARRETSON GARNERS ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES: Hunter Garretson garnered Second-Team All-America accolades on the strength of a 12th-place showing (18-1/5.51m) at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of New Mexico on March 10.
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips have posted one school record from Brian Masai in the men's 10,000 meters as part of three overall top-five performances in program history to the record book during the 2023 outdoor campaign.
