Â
AKRON, Ohio - The 10th-rated University of Akron rifle team turned in a record-setting performance en route to registering a school-record score of 4717 to triumph past No. 15 Jacksonville State, 4717-4669, on Saturday, Feb. 4 in Lexington, Va.
Â
Akron smashed the old school aggregate record of 4709 in the victory, while establishing a new school-record score of 2346 in the smallbore.
Â
Every team member in the match landed in the preferred zone of 580's in the smallbore, including those who fired at home, totaling nine Zips in the 580's. Junior Gavin Perkowski (Bolivar, Ohio) led the smallbore charge by narrowly missing the 590's posting a new career-high smallbore score of 589. Sophomore Alexis Kirk (Clarence Center, N.Y.) followed with a career-high score of 588.
Â
"When it all added up to the team total of 2346 for smallbore, something odd happened, I was speechless," Akron head coach Newt Engle commented. "This big number is so deserved by this group of athletes who have worked hard all season to make this happen."
Â
A three-way tie for the Zips' top air gun was achieved by Perkowski, freshman Andrew Duross (Marlborough, Mass.) and Kirk, who all fired a 593 out of the potential 600. Right there in the mix, and to round out the top five Zips who all achieved scores in the 90's, was junior Erin Schnupp (Gorham, Maine) (592) and senior Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y.) (591).
Â
Akron returns to competition traveling to Columbus, Ohio for the NCAA Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 18. The Zips will square off versus No. 6 Nebraska and No. 11 Ohio State.Â
