Baseball Takes One from Elon, Schimony Leads Offense

Elon, N.C. – The Akron Zips baseball team posted a 12-5 win in game two over Elon as the Phoenix secured games one (9-1) and three (8-3) over the weekend at Latham Park.
Freshman 1B Ethan Schimony (State College, Pa.) led the Zips offense with four hits, including his first career home run. Schimony went 3-of-5 to lead Akron in game two, plating five RBI and scoring two runs. In the second inning, he launched a three-run homer to left centerfield to give the Zips a 4-0 advantage. He went 4-of-11 for the weekend with seven runs scored and five RBI.
The Zips added to the lead in the 5th inning with RBI hits by redshirt freshman 3B Caleb Jenkins (Hillard, Ohio) and junior OF Jack Poist (Hoover, Ala.). Akron scored five additional runs before the game ended as Michael Sprockett delivered an RBI single in the sixth inning and doubled in the eighth for two RBI. Schimony also plated two more runs with a single.
Junior pitcher Anthony Fett (Orchard Lake, MI.) earned the win for Akron, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings while issuing two strikeouts and only allowing 3 hits.
For the weekend, five Akron players added three hits each as the Zips scattered 23 hits around the yard. Sophomore LF Sam Seeker (Norton, Ohio) registered a 3-of-9 performance with three base on balls, a pair of doubles, two RBI and a run scored, while Sprockett finished the series, batting 3-of-10 with two singles and a double mixed with three RBI, two base on balls and two runs. Poist followed with a 3-of-12 showing at the plate that included a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Ian Pennington (3-of-13) and Kaito Hara (3-of-14) rounded out the multiple-hit leaders. Pennington unleased a double for an RBI while both players plated runs.
Akron will be back in action in Holly Springs, N.C.with a four-game set against the Purdue Boilermakers on Friday through Sunday, March 3-5. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and the series finale (Sunday) is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
