Garretson and Prieto Headline Zips Efforts to Open MAC Indoor Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field team garnered a pair of league titles as part of 10 overall top-five finals finishes to highlight the Zips' performances on the opening day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, Feb. 24.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Redshirt sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) and sophomore Oscar Prieto (Barcelona, Spain) shared the men's pole vault title as each eclipsed 17-1 (5.21m). The mark was a career-best clearance for Prieto, who captured his first league title, while Garretson won his fourth conference crown in the event.
• Freshman Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) narrowly missed earning the title in the men's 5,000 meters crossing the line in 13:58.37, just 13 one-hundredths of a second off the winner's pace. His effort garnered him Second-Team All-MAC accolades for the first time.
• Trio of redshirt senior Milton Wilson (Streetsboro, Ohio), redshirt sophomore William Gross (Newfane, N.Y.) and redshirt junior Jabari Neal-Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted marks of 67-1 (20.45m), 63-9 (19.44m) and 62-6 (19.05m) to place second, third and fourth in the men's weight throw. Wilson earned All-MAC honors for the first time.
• Juniors Haruki Sakai (Katori, Japan) and Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) collected team points in the men's long jump with marks of 23-7.50 (7.20m) and 23-1.50 (7.05m) to place third and fifth, respectively. Sakai's performance was a career-best mark.
• Senior Amya Clarke (Christ Church, St. Kitts and Nevis) posted qualifying times of 7.51 and 24.79, to advance to the finals in the women's 60 and 200 meters, respectively.
• Freshman Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) qualified for the finals of the women's 400 meters with a time of 56.64.
• Redshirt sophomore Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) and senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) qualified for the finals on the men's 400 meters crossing the line in 49.85 and 50.53. Additionally, Harkelroad moved to the finals in the men's 200 meters with a preliminary time of 22.10.
• Redshirt Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) added a qualifying time in the women's 800 meters crossing the line in 2:12.82.
• Redshirt sophomore Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.) advanced to the finals of the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:55.77.
• Redshirt senior Quentin Woodall (Cleveland, Ohio) will move to the finals of the men's 60 meters after a career-best preliminary time of 6.99.
• Redshirt junior Robert Artrip (Independence, Ohio) posted a four-event cumulative score of 2,488 to sit in sixth place after opening day action in the men's heptathlon.
