Akron Opens Campaign with Dominating 20-4 Win at Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A first-half scoring surge propelled the University of Akron lacrosse team to season-opening 20-4 triumph past Howard on Friday, Feb. 17.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Junior Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.) opened the scoring with the first of four goals on the afternoon at the 14:04 mark of the opening quarter to give Akron a 1-0 lead.
• Following a tally by the Bison, the Zips garnered tallies from junior Jacqueline Glassey (Kildeer, Ill.) and senior Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.) at the 2:21 and 0:00 marks, respectively, to extend Akron's margin to 3-1 after the first period.
• The Zips continued their run of seven unanswered goals as Boyd (14:09 | 12:38), freshman Emma Baker (Norristown, Pa.) and Kunttu (12:55 | 9:55) gave Akron an 8-1 lead midway through the second quarter.
• Senior Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) netted her first of four goals on the afternoon to send Akron into the intermission leading 9-3.
• The Zips scored eight unanswered goals in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 17-3 on the strength of tallies from Boyd (14.08), sophomore Jaelyn Clinkscales (Rochester, N.Y.) (12:41), Kiefer (10:53 | 7:00 | 1:54), junior Alexi Hardy (Beavercreek, Ohio) (9:15), junior Anjali Silverheels (Hamburg, N.Y.) (3:56) and senior Madison Doletzky (Clearwater, Fla.) (0:32).
• Clinkscales (10:32), junior Lillian Bowling (Louisville, Ky.) (3:21) and sophomore Gabby Mahaffey (Columbus, Ohio) (0:00) capped the Zips' scoring effort with fourth-quarter goals.
• Baker, Doletzsky, Hardy and Mahaffey each netted their first career goals in the triumph.Â
• Sophomore GK Hannah Sanders (Massillon, Ohio) registered three saves in net for the Zips.
