AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron lacrosse team under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Christy Mitchell will commence its 2023 campaign with a pair of matches this weekend at Howard and Delaware State on Friday, Feb. 17 (3:30 p.m.) and Sunday, Feb. 19 (12 p.m.), respectively.
SCOUTING AKRON:
Senior Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) and junior Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.), who posted 95 shots apiece, headlined Akron's offensive efforts last season. Boyd, Kiefer, senior Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.), junior Anjali Silverheels (Hamburg, N.Y.) recorded a team-high 39, 29, 14 and 13 goals, respectively, while Boyd registered team-best marks in goals (39), points (44), shots (95), shots on goal (80) and draw controls (122), while ranking second in assists (5) and ground balls (42). Sophomore GK Hannah Sanders (Massillon, Ohio) turned in 42 saves for Akron on the year.

Boyd rated first in the MAC in draw controls (122) and draw controls per contest (7.18), third in ground balls (42) and ground balls per outing (2.47), fourth in goals per game (2.29) and shots per tilt (5.59), sixth in goals (39) and shots (95), seventh in point (44), ninth in points per outing (2.59).

Additionally, junior Abby McMullen rated second in the league in ground balls (44) and ground balls per tilt (2.59), third in caused turnovers (27) and caused turnover per outing (1.59), ninth in draw controls (53) and 10th in draw controls per match (3.12), while senior Jenna Ridener (Cincinnati, Ohio) rated fifth in caused turnovers (23) and caused turnovers per outing (1.35). Senior Julia Frombach (Avon, Ohio) ranked fourth in caused turnovers (24) and caused turnovers per match (1.41), seventh in ground balls (33) and in ground balls per game (1.94).

Akron is squaring off against Howard for the first time in program history. The Bison own a 0-1 record on the campaign following a 16-4 setback versus Delaware State on Saturday, Feb. 11. Berkeley Clayborne directs the Howard offensive attack with team-high marks in goals (2), shots (3) and shots on goal (2), while Tea Vasquez has posted team-best totals in assists (1). Goalkeeper Jada Auletta has collected 12 saves on the campaign for the Bison. Howard is led by second-year head coach Karen Healy-Silcott, who owns a 1-17 ledger as a head coach for the Bison and is 59-97 in 11 overall campaigns as a head coach

Akron is squaring off against Delaware State for the second time in program history with the Zips leading the all-time series, 1-0. The Hornets own a 1-0 record on the campaign, following a 16-4 victory over Howard on Saturday, Feb. 11. London Downing directs the Delaware State offensive attack with team-high marks in goals (4) and points (4), while Gwenna Gentle has posted team-best totals in shots (9) and draw controls (6). Goalkeeper Yeda Couto-Erickson has collected seven saves on the campaign for the Hornets. Delaware State is led by fourth-year head coach Pamella Jenkins, who owns a 4-27 ledger as a head coach for the Hornets and is 16-59 in seven overall campaigns as a head coach.
